Dance by Teodora Kostova

A couple of weeks ago I posted an excerpt from Dance by Teodora Kostova. Click here to see the original post where you can also find details of the Playlist provide by the author and a link to a Giveaway.

I finally got around to reading the book today. I really enjoyed this story, so much so that I read it in a single sitting. What a lovely way to start my weekend – curled up in bed with a good book. I only meant to read a chapter or two while I had my coffee but…..

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Jared Hartley is happy. He has a starring role in a popular West End musical, great friends, adoring fans and his own flat in Central London. A relationship is not something he has ever really wanted. Making big plans for the future is not in his nature – Jared is content with his single status and enjoying all the benefits of that lifestyle.
He doesn’t even realise something is missing in his life.
Until he meets Fenix.

Fenix Bergman has a dream – to perform on Broadway. When he gets offered the lead role in Poison – a new musical based in London, he accepts, immediately recognising the huge potential of the show.

Fenix thinks he has his life completely figured out – he will move to London, help Poison become the new West End hit and bide his time until Broadway comes knocking on his door. He has never wished for anything else but proving to himself and the world that he is a performer worthy of the biggest theatre stage.
Until he meets Jared.

Jared and Fenix’s lives collide and they fill each other’s missing pieces. Neither of them expects to feel so much, so fast for the other.

Neither of them expects to need someone so badly when love hasn’t even been in their plans.

But when Fenix’s star becomes too bright for London, will the dream he’s chased all his life ruin the dream he’s holding in his hands?

Will he survive getting everything he’s ever wanted?

Will Jared?

So what did I think?

Set against the backdrop of the theatre, Dance brings together Fenix, a rising star who dreams of Broadway, and Jared, who is living his dream on the stage in London.

This is a story of a grand romance, the type of love that, when it hits, it hits hard and fast. It’s love at first sight and within days of meeting, Fenix and Jared are in love and inseparable.

“Come home with me,” he said quietly. Fenix hesitated. “Please. I…” he pulled back to look in his eyes. “I want to make love to you in a bed. Not that this wasn’t great, but fast and hard in a club’s toilet is not my idea of romance.”
“I wasn’t aware we were looking for romance,” Fenix replied, his voice teasing.
“Well, now that you are aware, will you come home with me?”

I loved the openness and honesty, the lack of trying to hide feelings, instead grabbing the opportunity for love with both hands and not wasting a minute of being happy – such a great motto for life! And when Jared and Fen are together, it is magic.

There is a lot of sex in the story. These are men with strong feelings who aren’t shy of being emotional but this doesn’t mean it is all gentle loving. Jared and Fen are passionate and their coupling is frequent – at times making love but at others it’s oh, so very hard and dirty!

It’s not all roses for Jared and Fenix and the book has its period of heartache as they make stupid decisions. Their world moves from perfect happiness to one filled with darkness and sorrow. I like how the author managed the choices made by these men and how the same idea of grabbing what life gives you with both hands brings them back together.

The story finishes with a lovely happy ending.

A copy of this book was provided by the author in return for my honest review.

★★★★ I Survived Seattle by J.K. Hogan ★★★★

Today’s review comes from guest reviewer Jonesy. Jonesy has given I Survived Seattle, the first book in the Coming About series, 4 fabulous stars.

I_Survived_Seattle_Cover

The Blurb…

As if being a deeply closeted gay man living in the South isn’t enough, Justice Crawford also suffers from a crippling anxiety disorder. Flying cross country to be the best man in his best friend’s wedding probably isn’t the best idea, right? Forced back into the closet after being rejected by his family, Justice has given up on the idea of finding acceptance and love. He has allowed his disorder and his troubled past to keep him from taking a chance, but love might just find him where he least expects it… in Seattle.

Sailor and charter boat captain Nic Valentine is still reeling from the unexpected death of his father, when the man of his dreams—literally—falls into his lap. He thinks he’ll never see the man again, but fate has other plans. Nic tries to resist the charms of adorably quirky, nervous Justice, because he has no desire to get tangled up with another closet case. But when life keeps throwing them together, will Nic decide that Justice might be a keeper after all?

So what did Jonesy think?

This is an insta-love story done quite well.  Sparks flew from the very beginning and it was nice to see Nic accept Justice’s neuroses.  Justice was a hot mess (although I couldn’t get my head around his name).  He suffers from anxiety and panic attacks with a helping of OCD.  Although he has his problems he doesn’t come across as weak and needy and I could totally relate to him and his disorders – I think we all have some form of anxiety and Justice was adorably neurotic.  Nic was a little more ‘regular guy’.  He had some hangups about being involved with someone still in the closet but despite this he still couldn’t get Justice out of his system and it was fun to watch them interact together.
I felt the love here between these two guys, even if it was a little quick, and the sex was pretty hot.  The drama between Justice and his mom felt a little rushed and when Nic goes missing the feelings fell a little flat.  There was a lovely HEA at the end but the lead up to it felt a little forced.  These are my only grumbles.
I enjoyed the side characters – even Rich.  He is a serious douchebag but I have a thing for ‘vanilla villains’.  I think all stories should have one.  This is book #1 of the ‘Coming About’ series and it would be interesting to see who stars in #2.  It would be nice to see if Rich can be redeemed.
I liked this a lot – but I didn’t love it.  I wanted to love it and I did in the beginning but the ending fell flat and it took away that spark for me.  I’m looking forward to more from this author.
4 stars from me!

The idea for Dance was born in a single day when a lot of things happened almost at once – I
went to a West End musical, saw the cover photo and listened to Fall Out Boy’s ‘Save Rock
and Roll’ album for the first time. That album is the biggest musical inspiration for the book.
I listened to it the whole time while writing and imagined ‘Poison’ as a Fall Out Boy inspired
musical.

‘The Phoenix’ is Fenix’s song. It fits him so well! That last scene in the musical, the one
from the cover shot, I imagined it with ‘My songs know what you did in the dark’ playing in
the background. And there were a few days when I couldn’t listen to ‘Just One Yesterday’
without imagining Jared heartbroken and alone.

Shortly after I finished writing Dance, I went to see Fall Out Boy live and it was such an
amazing experience. I felt their songs were already such a huge part of me, of my characters,
of the story, that it felt different than every other live show I’ve seen.

I also listened to Fall Out Boy’s ‘Infinity On High’ a lot. I rediscovered that album while
writing Dance. I hadn’t listened to it in ages and I remembered how much I used to love it. It
was like rereading my favourite book and discovering some things I’ve missed the first time
around.

I did listen to other music besides Fall Out Boy while writing. I have a new band crush, and
lead singer crush, in the face of New Politics and their lead singer David Boyd. They are
awesome! And David… God, the man is wild! They were supporting Fall Out Boy on their
tour and I saw them live, too, and let me tell you – I’d pay just to see them next time! They
sound incredible and David is a natural entertainer.

For the quieter moments in the book, I felt like I needed calmer music, which is not usually
my style. I listened to a lot of Lorde, Ed Sheeran and Imagine Dragons, as well as BBC Radio
One Live Lounge albums.

Here’s the full playlist for Dance.

Author bio:
Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in
London with my husband Ted and my son Jason. I’ve been writing ever
since I can remember, but it became my full time job in 2010 when I
decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have
to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the guts to fully
embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and
an interior designer among another things, but as soon as the novelty
of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing.
Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help
a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write
for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time
that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten
minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.
When
I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and
eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True
Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every
Wii game by a six year old.

CHAPTER 1

JUNE

“It’s going to be another hot one.”

This was the last thing the bubbly radio forecaster announced before Julian Capeletti switched off the radio. It was just too damn early in the morning for that much perkiness.

“Great,” he grumbled as he sat up in bed and tried to rub the sleep from his face.

He hated mornings. Some people heard birds chirping, appreciated sunrises, and saw everything through rainbow-colored glasses in the early morning hours, but that just wasn’t him.

Especially when he didn’t have work.

He just couldn’t muster the energy needed to be as functional as he was in the late hours—when he found his groove and could tackle even the most complex third plane mathematical equation anyone could throw at him. Mornings, well, it was a short list. Wake up, shower, drink coffee. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to get dressed somewhere in between. He didn’t need to have the perky announcer tell him about the weather, he could feel it firsthand as the sweat began to trickle down his chest.

“Fucking gross,” he moaned as he rose from bed and made his way to the bathroom.

He followed the same routine every morning. He stared at himself in the mirror, in search of…what, who knew. He splashed some water on his face and looked again. Maybe he should try holy water or some other miracle that would change what stared back at him. He saw the hint of dark circles under his eyes and he hated it.

Vanity wasn’t the issue, the dark circles were a reminder of the turn of bad luck that had plagued him for almost two years.

Like a series of snapshots, he always ran the images of that day through his mind. The one that marked the beginning of when it all started going to shit with no end in sight. Well, more than usual at least. The day his last steady foreman project ended because the owner faced trafficking charges and fled the country to avoid his impending capture. With assets frozen, the site was closed down and everyone was out of a job and a steady paycheck. He’d left work early to seek comfort in the arms of his partner, an eternal optimist, and found him busy giving comfort of a different type to another guy.

“Asshole,” he mumbled into the towel as he dried his face. Maybe a shower would work. Even if it didn’t wake him up, at least it would wash away the disgusting reminder of the South Florida blazing summer heat and humidity.

Freshly showered, Julian read the classifieds as he sipped his coffee. He closed his eyes and exhaled, enjoying the caffeine and sugar slowly bringing him to life. Finally. He skimmed the want ads searching for anything new that morning, something he hadn’t already called on that week. He grabbed the monthly community paper and spotted the listing with a large bold headline “Handyman Wanted for Repairs”. A long list of requirements followed, far beyond those for a traditional handyman. He exhaled sharply and frowned. He had seen this a lot lately, another potential employer taking advantage of the desperation in the workforce, wanting to hire someone for nothing. The laundry list of responsibilities read like the licensing exam for a contractor, not a handyman’s job description. Cheap bastard. “Contact Mr. Boner” it read toward the end, followed by an address and phone number. He couldn’t resist smiling at the play on words.

“No wonder Boner wants a handyman.” He chuckled.

A knock at the door interrupted his morning read through the ads.

“Hey, Jules, you in there?”

Julian cringed, not just at the nickname he hated so strongly, but at the voice he knew came to deliver bad news. He reluctantly rose to answer the knock.

“Hi, David,” he said as he slowly opened the door to greet the short, paunchy landlord.

“So, you got my rent this month?” David asked hopefully.

“I’ll have some money for you by the end of the week.” He rubbed his hands on his towel and looked away.

“That’s what you said last week.” David shifted to cross his arms in an attempt to intimidate.

Julian looked down at the short man and couldn’t blame him for trying. He knew David well enough to realize that he didn’t have a choice but to push at this point. He figured the guy was getting some unneeded pressure from the boss.

“I gave you some money last week.”

“That was to cover the rent from two months ago. What about last month or this one?”

Julian’s head began to hurt. This had been the ritual almost every day for the last month. He was a creature of habit, but there were some customs he wished would change.

“David, I told you I’d have some by the end of the week. I just need a little time.”

“That’s what they all say!” His landlord raised his arms in frustration.

“Look, I know I’m late, I’m not denying that, but at least when you come knocking, I don’t run and hide from you like your other tenants. I said I’ll have money for you at the end of the week and I will. I’ve never backed down on my word.”

“Yet, you’re late on your monthly payment.”

“And I told you I would be. Fuck, David, I said I was going to be late and you agreed it wasn’t a problem as long as I paid you something each week. I’m doing that.” He rubbed his shaved head roughly.

“How much? Will it be enough to cover the two months you owe me?” David pleaded.

“I don’t know. I’m guessing probably not by the end of the week.”

“Jules, I can’t keep doing this.”

“I know. I just need some time,” Julian said quietly, looking away as he rubbed his wrist cuff.

“Why don’t you sell your truck?”

Julian looked at him as if the burly man had sprouted another head. “Dude, I’m not selling my truck. I need it for work.”

“Please, Jules, I like you, but I can’t have you livin’ here for free. You know that. My bosses are pushing me for the rent. I need two months’ rent by the end of the week or they’re forcing me to kick you out of here.”

Julian could see both frustration and understanding in the man’s eyes. He’d known this day would come. Had dreaded it for the last few weeks. He rubbed his head and looked away. He tried to make an honest living, avoided trouble, and where did that leave him? Standing in his doorway with a towel around his waist trying to think of ways to scavenge up two months’ rent just to be back at square one again. He couldn’t think of anything to say so he simply nodded.

David looked at him and patted him on the shoulder. “Jules, you’re a hard worker and a smart cookie. I’m sure you’ll find a way.”

Ugh. First Jules now cookie. Seriously?

“Thanks, David,” he grumbled, hoping that would give the man the signal to turn and leave.

Mission accomplished. He closed the door and leaned his forehead against it. He blew out a deep breath, willing a new idea to blindside him. He thought of different quickie jobs and crossed each one off for different reasons. Well, he always had the option to sell his ass on Eighth Street, but who was he kidding? No one would give him two months’ rent for his bits. He laughed at himself. He had to. It was the only way he’d remain sane when life gave him the shit end of the stick. He turned to see the newspaper still sitting on the table. He walked over and grabbed his coffee and gulped the little bit of remaining java along with his pride.

If the guy needed a handyman, he was going to be the best damn handyman that cheap bastard had ever seen. If that didn’t work, well, Eighth Street was actually starting to sound pretty damn good.

Excerpt

Jason smiled and lifted his head up for a kiss. Kale was happy to oblige. Moving his hand to the crook of Jason’s neck, Kale deepened the kiss. When he began to feel Jason’s erection against his leg, he broke away. Tonight he wanted to prolong things. He finished undressing Jason and then removed his own clothes. Going back to Jason’s ribs, he picked up where he’d left off. Slowly his lips and hands explored every inch of Jason’s body, paying homage to the man who had given up everything for him. The only place that was left untouched was his cock. That would wait.

Kale sat up on his knees and gazed down at Jason, marveling at how perfect he looked, pale skin against the dark green of the comforter. If things were different, Kale would have taken him, rough and passionate, but as much as Kale wanted to, he couldn’t. He was the slave and Jason was the master, but more importantly, Jason needed to feel in control right now, empowered. More than anything, Jason needed to know that he had Kale and wasn’t going to lose him.

Kale reached across the bed and got the oil from the bedside table. Slowly, he prepared himself, locking eyes with Jason and seeing the lust building in them, a lust he knew was mirrored in his own eyes. When he was done, he moved on all fours to Jason’s side and leaned down to whisper in his ear. “I’m ready for you, master. I’m yours, and I’ll never turn you away.” When he pulled back, he saw a flash of possessiveness in Jason’s eyes before he got up and ran a hand down Kale’s side as he positioned himself behind him.

“Yes, you’re mine, and I’m never giving you up.” Jason entered him in one long thrust, groaning as Kale gasped. It wasn’t harsh, but it was firm and exactly what both of them needed. For a moment, Jason was still inside Kale, letting him adjust while he rubbed his hands up and down his back murmuring, “Mine.” Then he started thrusting, quickly finding a rhythm. Kale bucked his hips back, meeting each stroke and groaning at the pleasure he felt. Gods, he hoped Jason wouldn’t take long. His body was already thrumming with the effort to hold back. There was no way he was going to allow himself to come first.

Kale began to grip Jason each time he entered, showing his eagerness and urging him to lose control. Just when Kale thought Jason was close, Jason leaned over him to speak in his ear. “Eager, are we? I don’t know why. You won’t be coming tonight until I say.”

Kale groaned and buried his head in the bed. At least Jason was back in control where, whether Kale liked it or not, he needed him to be. How had he gotten to the point where this man commanded him so completely? The thought was fleeting; at the moment he didn’t care. All he cared about was completing Jason and then hoping his master would let him come.

Thankfully, Jason began to pick up the pace. Only trouble now was that the faster pace meant it took all of Kale’s concentration to not come. “You’re mine, Kale; I chose you. Whether you like it or not, you’re the one I’m going to be with.” He liked it all right, he liked it too much. Jason’s hands moved from Kale’s back to grasp his hips painfully. The pain cut through Kale’s need and centered him, giving him something to focus on to keep his orgasm at bay. A few more harsh thrusts and Jason stilled, crying out as he came.

Spent, Jason fell on Kale and rolled over, bringing him with him so they were spooning. Jason’s hand crept over Kale’s hip and lightly stroked his erection, eliciting a whimper from Kale. “You’re going to have to hold this for me for a while if you want release tonight.” Kale’s only answer was to desperately thrust forward into Jason’s hand. “Are you disobeying me, Kale?”

Immediately, Kale stilled. “No. Yes. No, master.”

“Hmm. Now roll over and take care of me. The sooner you get me ready to go again, the sooner you can come.”

Kale rolled over and glared at Jason, relaxing boneless and sated with that pleasant post coital glow. Jason laughed. “You really need to learn to control that temper of yours. Patience is a virtue.”

“One you don’t seem to have.” Kale plopped next to Jason and began to rub his chest.

Jason laughed and covered Kale’s hand with his own. “True, but I never did claim to be virtuous. You’re the only one who seems to think I’m perfect.”

“And you’re the only person who seems to think I’m worth anything. I guess we’re cut out for each other.”

Jason sobered immediately and grabbed Kale by the hair, forcing him to meet his eyes. “Don’t speak like that. You really think I’d own a worthless slave? That I’d take a worthless man to my bed? Just because you had to settle for me because I was lucky enough to get you doesn’t mean anyone thinks you’re worthless. And anyone who says otherwise can come tell me to my face.”

Kale marveled at the sincerity in Jason’s voice. He really believed Kale was worthwhile, and he would fight any man who challenged that. He’d lose, but he’d fight them just the same. Jason held Kale’s head firmly in his grip until Kale nodded his understanding. After he was released, Kale got up and fetched a washcloth to clean Jason. By the time he was done, Jason was already beginning to harden again. Wanting his own release, Kale reached down and began to stroke Jason’s shaft back to a full erection. Jason relaxed into the bed and closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation. Looking down on Jason, Kale was so absorbed in studying his face that he was surprised when he felt Jason’s warm hand curl around his own, halting his movement.

“That’s enough. I have other plans.”

Kale grabbed the oil, readying to be taken again. Jason reached out and took hold of his wrist. “Give it to me.” Puzzled, Kale handed over the container and watched wide-eyed as Jason poured some out and began to finger himself. Kale froze, not wanting to believe his luck.

Jason chuckled. “Kale, I know what you need tonight, what you’ve wanted since I came home. I might not have succeeded tonight, but I’m still going to take care of you.”

Kale’s mouth had gone dry. “I don’t need to; you can take me again.”

Jason got up on his knees and came flush against Kale. “Yes, you do need it. And even if you didn’t, I do. I need to know you love me, that you want me as much as I want you. Tonight, I need to feel that I’m yours.”

Kale closed his eyes and shuddered. How well Jason knew him. When he opened his eyes, he saw Jason looking so vulnerable that it was hard to believe he was the same man that had just taken him so forcefully. Leaning forward, he kissed him and felt Jason’s body melt against his. Snaking his hands up his back, he gently lowered him to the bed. Once they were situated, Kale looked down at Jason. “Are you sure?”

“More sure than I’ve ever been of anything.”

Kale simply nodded and inserted a finger. He wasn’t going to risk hurting him or worse. After he had carefully stretched Jason out and slathered himself with oil, he lined up his cock and slowly slipped in, groaning as the heat of Jason’s body enveloped his own. Once inside, he settled, letting Jason become accustomed to him. This felt so good, so good to be surrounded by Jason, to feel his heat on his cock, so good to be allowed to do this because Jason sensed it was important and cared enough to let him. He opened his eyes and looked down on Jason who had a look of sheer contentment on his face that made Kale wonder how he’d gotten this lucky.

“You may come whenever you’re ready, Kale.” Jason clamped down on him to emphasize his point.

Kale leaned down and kissed Jason on the lips, grasping his head between his hands, as he slowly began to thrust, savoring the moment. When he pulled away, he kept his eyes on Jason’s face, wanting to see all of his reactions. The looks of pure bliss that erupted on Jason’s face gave Kale a feeling of pride at being the one to deliver such pleasure. Kale felt more than ever that he belonged to this man, but he also acknowledged for the first time that Jason belonged to him as well.

The sheer emotion of the moment was overwhelming. He couldn’t control himself anymore. Quickening the pace, he dropped his head to Jason’s chest and wrapped one arm around him. With his other hand, he reached between their bodies and grabbed Jason’s cock. Even though his head had succumbed to a haze of feeling, he knew that he wanted Jason to come with him. There was no way that he would answer Jason’s generosity with selfishness. It was sloppy work as his pleasure mounted, but he managed to stroke Jason in time with his thrusts.

Jason’s hands came to Kale’s head, holding him tight and running his fingers through his hair as he moaned in pleasure. Pressed up against Jason’s body, Kale became intoxicated by the heady scent of sweat. Darting his tongue out, he tasted the salt on Jason’s skin, and it made him hungry for more. Groping with lips and tongue, he found Jason’s nipple and began to play with it. The sounds coming from Jason were now more urgent, and Kale felt his hands tighten in his hair. Kale increased the rhythm of his thrusts and stroking until Jason’s grip turned to a vice and he came with a loud growl. Kale released the nipple and shouted out his relief as he came too.

Once the last wave of pleasure had receded, he rolled off Jason, only to be pulled into a deep kiss. When Jason broke away, he rested on Kale’s chest. The weight felt comfortable and right, and when Kale began to stroke Jason’s back, he felt the most possessive urge he’d ever experienced.

Jason nuzzled against Kale, and goose bumps began to break out on their skin as the cooling air hit the sheen of sweat that covered them both. “I’m so lucky to have you.”

“What, you don’t think Demetri would have been as good in the sack? No, I’m the lucky one. I never thought I’d have a master like you.”

Jason’s voice was heavy with sleep. After two orgasms, he was struggling to stay awake. “Demetri’s an ass, and I was stupid for wanting him. Wouldn’t trade you for the world.”

“Or a woman.”

Jason laughed, and Kale thought it was the sweetest sound he had ever heard. “Or a woman.”

A few minutes later, Jason went limp and heavy on Kale’s chest. The look on his face was so pure and unguarded that it took Kale’s breath away. Yes, Jason was his, he knew that now. Tightening his grip around the other man, Kale also knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to take care of what was his.

Excerpt

“Sean wanted to go to him. To wrap his arms around the boy who always included him, to the man who always comforted him. Instead, he squeezed the pillow tighter and willed Rusty to turn around. If he would just turn around.

“Bravado. It was all bluff. I was scared shitless. Every time we moved, I was scared shitless.”

“What were you afraid of?”

“Of being alone.”

“Is that why you’re with me?” Rusty unfolded his arms and scrubbed both hands through his curls. “No, of course not. You would never have to be alone if you didn’t want to be. With the way you look, with the way you are, you’d just have to give a guy one of those sideways looks and he’d follow you anywhere.”

“No, Rusty. No. They wouldn’t. I wouldn’t.”

“You did. You said you really wanted to go to Boston.” Rusty turned around. The tears streaking his face broke Sean’s heart. “And I said I would follow you anywhere.”

“And now you don’t want to.”
